Yahoo Inc. said Tuesday it pulled out of China, citing an increasingly challenging operating environment there.
The move is largely symbolic, as many of the company services are already blocked by China digital sensors. But recent moves by the government to expand control over technology companies, including domestic giants, may have turned things around for Yahoo.
"Due to the increasingly challenging business and legal environment in China, Yahoo services will no longer be available in mainland China from November 1," the company said in a statement. The company said it "remains committed to safeguarding users rights and a free and open Internet".
The company move comes at a time when the two governments are at odds over technology and trade issues. The United States has imposed restrictions on telecom giant Huawei and other Chinese tech companies, claiming they have ties to the Chinese government, military or both. China says the United States is unfairly stifling competition and trying to prevent China technological rise.
Yahoo is the latest foreign technology company to pull out of China. Google gave up a few years ago, and LinkedIn, Microsoft professional networking platform, said last month that it would shut down its Chinese-language site and replace it with a job board. The departures illustrate the choices Internet companies face in a huge potential market but are required by the government to censor politically sensitive or inappropriate content and keywords.
Instead, Chinese companies have filled the void by creating an alternative Internet with their own digital giants. Baidu search engine has largely replaced Yahoo and Google in China, and WeChat and Weibo are the leading social media platforms.
Yahoo departure comes as China enforces its Personal Information Protection Law, which limits what Information companies can collect and sets standards for how it can be stored.
Chinese law also requires companies operating in China to hand over data if requested by authorities, making it difficult for Western companies to operate in the country because they may also come under pressure at home to bow to Chinese demands.
