What's 316? Stainless Steel?

Alloys are frequently added with steel in order to increase its desired properties. Marine-grade stainless steel, commonly referred to as Type 316, is resistant to corrosive environments.

There are numerous types of stainless-steel 316. There are several common types, including L or F, as well as N and H variants. Each variant is different and each is used for specific purposes. L means that 316L steel is a carbon content below the 316.

The 316 and the 316L Stainless Steel Common Quality

Although similar to the Type 304 commonly found in the food industry, the Type 316 and 316L both have higher resistance to corrosion. They also have greater strength at high temperatures. They are also not able to be hardened through heat treatment. They are able to be easily stretched and shaped.

The stainless steel of 316L is lower in carbon than 316. But even with its less carbon, 316L is very similar to 316 in nearly every way. Its cost is comparable, as are both durable and resistant against corrosion, making them an excellent choice in extreme stress situations.

For projects that require a significant amount in welding can be a better option since 316 is more susceptible to corrosion from welding than the 316L (corrosion on the inside of the welding). However, 316L can be annealed to withstand the attenuation of welding. Additionally, it is a suitable stainless for high temperature, high corrosion projects, which is why it's so popular in marine and construction.

It is not clear if 316 or 316L is the most affordable option. The 304 is comparable to the 304L and 304L, however, the price is much lower. Neither is as durable as the 317 and 317L which are stronger, have greater molybdenum content as well as better general corrosion resistance.
